I was recently hired to provide a live engraving activation for an Ascend Series event in Seattle, presented in partnership with The Female Quotient, Delta Air Lines, and American Express. The Ascend Series centers on uplifting female founders and business owners, and the evening paired a panel discussion with live gifting experiences from a handful of women owned businesses, mine included.

Purple Café in downtown Seattle was perfectly moody that night: a little rain outside, candlelight and brick inside, wine bottles lining the staircase. My engraving station sat in the back of the room alongside a personalized fragrance bar provided by Noir Lux Candle Co., and the discussion panel, food, and wine filled out the front.
The special gift of the evening for Delta Skymile AMEX card holders were the hand engraved luggage tags made from 100% recycled 747 aircraft metal. The metal had a beautiful sheen that let the lettering show up perfectly while keeping the elevated look of these luxe tags.

What I did not expect was how delighted the guests were to show that they were qualified for the tags! To receive a tag, guests showed they were Delta Amex SkyMiles members, and they pulled out their Amex cards like a badge of honor! At least two of the women were million milers, and I enjoyed hearing others trade stories about how often they fly Delta and why they have stayed loyal for years. In a room of several hundred women, I was genuinely surprised by how many turned out to be Delta Amex holders.

Something I don't always share is that I approached the engraving that night with a bit of nervousness. Most metals cut beautifully under a diamond or carbide bur, but I have run into alloys before that barely take a mark with my tools. I did not know exactly what this aircraft metal was made of and certainly didn't have a convenient away to test it out (though I did text my friend, fellow engraver, and former pilot Raquel Demorest to see if she knew). Normally, if I am unsure how a material will respond, I ask to test it ahead of time. That was not possible for these special tags, so I brought a backup option and proceeded cautiously. But, thankfully I was wonderfully pleased to discover it engraved beautifully.
If there is a takeaway here for brands and event planners considering a live personalization activation, it is something I have seen prove true again and again. What people tend to remember isn't the giveaway itself, it's watching something get made just for them, by hand, right in front of their eyes. The Delta tags could have been handed out pre-engraved at the door and still looked beautiful, but watching each one made in real time is what turned a nice keepsake into a genuine moment, the kind that gets a guest talking, sparking conversations, and building in anticipation while they waited their turn. Guests walk away with more than an object. They walk away with a memory, a connection with others, and a keepsake of the event. I call that a major win.

One final note that I'll end on is a personal reflection. Women supporting women is so powerful. We need more examples of what it looks like to celebrate one another, to share resources, to acknowlege and to champion the hard work and excellene we see in one another. It's beautiful when done well. If you are planning a special event, brand activation, corporate event, or experiential marketing moment in Seattle and want to talk through what a live engraving or calligraphy experience could look like, I would love to hear from you.
